Natural Link Building

I came across this great article this morning. It covers many areas of link building "naturally" and how to create content worthy of linking to. The author himself does a good job of it since here I am linking to his article about linking to articles! He goes on to list a number of excellent techniques used for marketing your content, web site, or blog. Perhaps a little over complicated for the novice, but he obviously knows what he's talking about.

SEOmoz | Catalysts for Earning Natural Links & Link Conversion Rates
"Reference worthy content" is a phrase you'll hear a lot in the SEO realm. The intent behind the statement is simple - build content that people will be likely to cite when they create works on the web. Parsing the motivations that inspire those citations, however, is anything but obvious. Tonight, I thought I'd try to list features that make content "reference worthy" and help to shed some insight on the psychological catalysts that build natural links.

Questions to Ask Your SEO Company

This is a really great article, despite it's choppy English, about which questions asked of an SEO, should never have an exact answer.
Instant SEO strategy for my company: If your preferred SEO Company gives you a plan right now, get prepared to face the worst. Many companies have set packages for x number of dollars and an extra set of services for just a few dollars more and while offering this, they forget that no one-size-fits-all SEO plan takes extensively long to show results. It is beneficial for you to acknowledge the fact that every website is unique. Every client has a different budget, competition level, the number of inbound links, the content on your website and many other factors. No two clients can have the same exact situation.

Questions your SEO company should not answer exactly!!

Lots of Information on Blogs

This article explains, in perhaps too much detail the ins and outs about the different types of blogs. I find it interesting how he breaks everything down, and gives many useful tips to consider before choosing a format for your new blog. However as many things in SEO and blogging, I finds that most people over think it and try too hard to find the "right" way to do things rather than just finding a "great" way to do things. In any case this is a good read:

Why the whole world is wrong about weblogs | Weblog of Edward de Leau
There are two “weblogs”.

1. The first one is the weblog as media format, these are the websites that you can not describe simply as “weblog” but always in the context of what information they offer.

* A website which shows pieces of content called postings in revere order
* Every post has a title, sometimes a subtitle, a body of content and some metadata like a date and a trackback URL
* Tags, categories and other taxonomies are used to categorize the postings and provide sub portals
* Archives are generally available in monthly format to function as back reference
* Various extra’s like Feeds (RSS/Atom) and millions of plug-ins/widgets are available on

The website uses the media format “website” tot e.g. describe new gadgets, news on topic X or presents niche information on a specific domain. You can find these weblogs in the top 1000 in Technorati. Before the format was invented these websites could have existed, they would simply represent the information on gadgets, web2.0 news and so on, in a different way and would still be able to get their information across.

You can not simply describe these websites as “weblogs” since you always refer to “a site about gadgets” or “a site about apple”.

2. The second one is the weblog as website type. I will not define it here, but below, to not scare you off. You also know this one:

* It uses the same format as above, but can not exist without the specific format
* It displays postings related to all of the goals of one specific entity,
where goals can include “need to have hobby”, “need to have work”, “need to have life” and related subgoals such as “need to have hobby music”, which leads to a posting about buying a new cd. The postings cover the same goals-action money/time division as within the entity’s domain which is more than often a household.
* It has a wide range of different kind of content
* It has a wide range of different types of postings, where type can be: a link, a brainstorm, a hobby related postings, a job related posting, a budget related posting, an inspirational posting and so on.

Generally called “personal weblog about everything in that persons life”.

The reason that a weblog of the second kind is unique is that it really represents the thing it is and can not exist without the concept itself and is tied to that person’s life goals.

Choosing the Right Domain

I've touched on this before, but I came across another article that has some good tips to consider when choosing a new domain name. I still maintain that in the long term a well "branded" domain name that has a ring to it will be more beneficial to your web site and your business than a domain purely based on keywords. ie. twitter.com vs cool-social-network-site.com I own many domain names myself, and often find myself going for the keyword rich domains. None the less the author makes great points about word of mouth exposure. Perhaps this is no more true than in the social network circle, but either way your company has an identity and so should your web site.

Domain Name Branding | SEO Book.com
Choosing a domain name for a new project can be a little daunting.

All the good names are gone. Once you find something acceptable, you'll have to be sure you can live with it for a long time. And what about the implications for SEO?

So many considerations.
Do You Want A Disposable Domain Name?

Some domains are throw-away, so the domain name doesn't matter so much. buy-viagra-online-cheapest.com might be just fine for someones 100th pharma site. We all know it's going to be blitzed eventually, anyhow ;)

For such domains, brand is never going to be a major consideration. But for most other projects, I'd recommend devoting time to brand considerations and credibility factors.

Why?

Considering Starting a Blog for Your Business?

Blogging is one of the best ways to promote your business these days. However a successful blog will offer information first, a sales pitch second if at all. If you hammer your readers with promos and incentives to buy they will leave. It's like sponsored results from the search engines. Though people do click them, they tend to have the feel of a "commercial" and less credibility from an information standpoint. For example if I'm researching lawnmowers and I want to learn all I can about the features that are available and which one would suit my needs best I want unbiased opinions from actual people, not the company trying to simply sell me there "super top of the line new" model! With your blog you should maintain a personal feel, and keep an open mind to comments, suggestions, and questions.

The other issue for a new blog is traffic. If you optimize your blog you should be able to gain traffic fairly easily. Social networks are also an excellent way to drive traffic to your blog, Twitter and Facebook being 2 of the best. Bookmarking sites such as Digg, Delicious, and Stumbleupon are other great ways to spread the word about your latest post.

Here are some more tips to starting up a blog for your business:

4 Ways to Boost Business With a Blog--Starting a business blog--Entrepreneur.com
If done correctly, a blog can attract a dedicated audience to build upon and share expertise, information, ideas and content, while boosting awareness of your company and brand. If done incorrectly, however, you can leave customers feeling dissatisfied and ready to turn to your competitor. Here are four ways you can leverage a blog:

Be careful not to over write your content

As I tell our clients often writing new, relevant, and informative content is not rocket science. They always ask me about the keywords, how to use them best, how often, where, etc. I always tell them, write it the way your customer would read it the best. Don't over think the use of keywords. If your web site is selling cookie cutters don't you think writing an article about the cookie cutters you sell will naturally contain your keywords? It's not necessary for your article to read "cookie cutter" every 3 sentences. Just write a well written, informative article. Use your expert knowledge in your industry and share it with your customers.

Why SEO content should be written for humans
With the emphasis on keywords, long tail and results page rank, many people in the search engine optimization industry forget that the people who will actually be reading their content are humans, not robots.

That's the view of Kevin Gibbons writing for Econsultancy who says that the view that the purpose of search engine optimization (SEO) is to get to the top of a SERP is "like saying the purpose of cooking is to heat meat, rather than eat it."

Although keywords are important for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes, Gibbons says they shouldn't be crowbarred into a piece and should fit naturally when possible.

But it's important to remember that the content is not for search engines, it's for actual living, breathing humans.

Dreamhost, not so dreamy

I couldn't resist posting this article I came across about Dreamhost. Dreamhost is a web hosting company that offers great prices on their hosting plans, endless options, and perhaps the best control panel in the business. I have personally used them in the past for their hosting services, and without going into all the gruesome details it didn't exactly end in the happiest way. It had to do with some of their policies and me not 100% in complyence with them. This is why I found this article so interesting, seems pretty hypocritical to me.

Clickfire SEO Blog - SEO, Web Hosting, Web Design, PC Gaming, Social Media, Domains
Philosophers have pondered the secret of happiness for centuries. The pursuit of happiness is set forth in the United States Declaration of Independance. Now a company out of Brea, California has discovered the details of what happiness actually is: web hosting.

I was doing a little light domain research and happen to come across a domain registered through the DreamHost Proxy service. DreamHost’s web hosting service received a respectable 4 out of 5 star rating by our reviewer a while back. I guess I’d forgotten that DreamHost was an official ICANN registrar. Having spent probably too much of my life starring at domain registration records, I couldn’t help but notice a few unorthodox lines in a DreamHost customer’s proxy record. This first one appears in the name field:

PageRank Google Toolbar

I was just doing some reading on what people think the gray Google PageRank bar means. While I agree with the author that I think we should not put so much emphasis on PR in general, it is still curious exactly what it means. Obviously new web sites are always grayed out usually anywhere from a few weeks to several months, at which point they turn white. I've always thought that once the web site has been indexed by Google a certain number of times it would turn white. Perhaps to see if the web site itself is sticking around rather than just being parked. None the less let the theroies continue.

What Does The Gray Google PageRank Bar Mean?
The last time we discussed the grey PageRank Google toolbar indicator was just about two years ago. It was then when the gray/grey color changed from meaning banned to having no clear meaning. Back then, there was a blank white bar and a blank gray bar, both with PR0s. White meant PageRank was not yet calculated for the page, gray likely meant a ban or penalty. This is no longer the case.

Today, we have a thread at WebmasterWorld discussing what the gray bar means. There are a few theories that I will share with you.

One person thinks that gray is given to pages with not enough PageRank to reach the 1 level. Another person thinks that pages in the supplemental index receives gray. Some believe that pages with penalties still receive the gray indicator. Let me quote Tedster's post on this topic:

Flash Intros: It's Unanimous

When I asked my Twitter followers and Facebook friends what they hated most as far as web site features go, almost unanimously, they responded "flash intros". A couple of comments in particular:

From Twitter: @Studio2Online said, "Flash intro's that have no relevence to the website aren't good!"

From Facebook, a friend said:
1. Auto play music
1a. Music that cannot be shut off
2. Sites built entirely in Flash.
3. Sites built with a fixed frame of view, say a 800x600 box.

My personal number one pet peeve, is auto-play music. I can't tell you how many times I've been on the phone with a client or colleague and loaded a page that played music. It's even worse when you're using a Skype headset or a softphone headset and you can't hit your mute button to get rid of it or you'll cut off your phone conversation. It is, by far, the most obnoxious thing anyone can do on their site. How arrogant to think that your web site is the only thing that matters, not a person's job or a person's personal music, or a person's abilitiy to carry on a phone conversation. Nope, our lives must be put on hold just to visit your web site.

For me, it calls for an immediate click of the back button. I don't care if the site is giving me a million dollars, I wouldn't stick around long enough to be able to read that. When it interfertes with phone calls, I curse the company who owns the site until I'm blue in the face. It amazes me that people still do this. Is that what they want their site to invoke? Sheer rage?

Flash intros are just as arrogant. It's forcing your potential customers to take one extra step before they get the info they were looking for. It's like saying, "here, let me waste your time with this pretty montage of crap". In case anyone wasn't paying attention, the internet is about instant gratification. Things that used to take hours now must take seconds or the user goes elsewhere. You literally have a few seconds to grab your user's attention or they'll find what they're looking for on one of millions of other sites. Do you want that few seconds to be used up showing them slides of how your factory works or would you rather those few seconds be spent on your sales pitch? If people had time to sit around and watch animations of fuzzy bears stealing picnic baskets before they get taken to rate info about your campsite, they'd probably be using the yellow pages and it would probably be 1989.

The Importance of the Right Page Titles

Well, after along relaxing weekend, my inbox is filled with free analyses. One thing I notice doing so many analyses is that a good majority of the sites submitted to me for analysis are in excellent shape and are only missing one thing: proper page titles. Many web sites use their business name as their page titles and some even leave the titles blank. Some sites have spent a lot of time and money developing their backlinks and PageRank and are in absolutely great shape in regards to search engine marketing and the fact that they use their business name is the only reason they aren't ranking in the top 5 on Google.

Some tips for writing proper titles:

1. Your number one, most important keyword phrase should appear first in your page title.

2. If you want to brand your titles, add your business name after the key phrase.

3. Your titles should not be too long. Take a look at the top 5 sites on Google and choose a similar length title.

4. Your titles should be functional as well. They should describe what's on the page in a few words. Remember, the number one most important rule to a successful web site is to make it user-friendly.

5. Each page should have a different title. It doesn't need to be entirely different, but it should refelct the fact that it is a different page.

Follow these simple rules, and you may be surprised where you rank next week.

The Top Traffic-producing Social Bookmarking Sites

Last week we looked at sites that help you choose a keyword rich domain name. This week we are going to cover the top traffic-generating social bookmark sites. I have ordered them in descending order according to data from all of our web sites' and clients' site traffic data.

1. Digg - This shouldn't come as a great shocker. Digg is probably the most recognizeable social bookmarking site out there and with their myriad of buttons, badges and widgets, they make it easy for an article to get around.

2. Yahoo! Buzz - Yahoo! Buzz is extremely easy to use and integrates with all your other Yahoo! services fairly seemlessly.

3. StumbleUpon - With quick submissions and easy language, StumbleUpon is one of the most used social bookmarking services.

4. Google Bookmarks - Google Bookmarks allows you to store your bookmarks online and synchronize multiple browsers to have those bookmarks available within them.

5. Propeller - Propeller allows you to "prop" articles and can bring a good amount of traffic.

6. Del.icio.us - Delicious is similar to Google Bookmarks in that it can allow you to store and synchronize your bookmarks so they never get lost.

7. Technorati - Add technorati tags to the bottom of your blog posts or add a "Favorite this" button to your blog to have individual posts appear on the site.

8. Reddit - Reddit is probably the easiest to use bookmarking site out there. Submission takes a matter of seconds.

9. Mixx - Mixx is a much more full-featured bookmarking tool.

10. And finally, Care2 - while most people think this is a non-profit only site, it does have a news section in which you can submit news articles and "note" them. Very similar to Digg or Stumbleupon.

Social boomarking can be a great way to get extra traffic to your web site. If you're reading this on our blog, try a few of them out by clicking the boomarking icons at the bottom of this post.

If you have trouble with any of these, let us know by emailing us.

We hope you enjoyed this week's Sunday Sites and hope you'll read again next week!

Use of Keywords for Optimizing URL

I came across this article on Digg and while the author makes some good points here that make it a good read, there are some things I don't agree with.

If you are starting a new web site and choosing a domain name you need to decide a few things. Do you want to choose a keyword rich domain name? Or are you more concerned with branding?

For example, If I run a pastry shop in Manitoba, and I want a keyword rich domain I may use: www.pastry-shop-manitoba.com Yes there are advantages to this as the article points out, but I don't believe that Google puts that much emphasis on the keywords in the url. Making use of those keywords in your page title and throughout the content on your page is what will influence the rankings more.

Now let's say the name of my pastry shop is "Heavenly Sweets". Why not use that or some variation of it as your url? www.heavenly-sweets-manitoba.ca No there are no big time keywords in the url, but I can still use Pastry Shop Manitoba as my page title. Mission accomplished and I have also branded my web site.

There are countless examples of this on the internet, including in the authors article itself. www.twitter.com Where are the keywords in that url? www.google.com, www.facebook.com These are big time web sites that have created a brand with no keywords in there url. In fact the word Google itself has become a verb, how many times have you heard someone say, "I'm going to Google that." If you search on Google for "search engine" you know what the number 1 result is? Oddly it's not even google.com it's www.altavista.com None the less it proves my point that keywords are not necessary in your url.

This is not to say that if opportunity presents itself to grab a keyword rich domain that you shouldn't. I mean if my company was called Cheap Flights and I could have www.cheapflights.com and it's 16,600,000 monthly searches you better believe that I would jump on that in a second.

Bottom line is, there is more to consider when choosing a domain name than just keywords. The most successful web site's on the internet know that.

Top 8 Tips To Optimize URL Structure For Search Engines
First reason to optimize URL structure is to increase search engine rankings which will bring us free natural traffic. Secondly human readable URL structure can increase your clickthrough rate. People click more on readable URLs as they give us idea about the actual content on the web page.

Twitter can be a Simple Broadcast Medium

SEO Blog - Internet Marketing Blog
One of the first things you’ll hear from people is that “Twitter is not a broadcast medium.” It is, they’ll argue, a medium for two way communications. But let’s be realistic. Now that major celebrities and corporations are Tweeting, the service is featuring more one-way communications than ever before.

There’s no rule that says you have to follow everyone who follows you. Some do it because they think it looks like they’re interested in the law of reciprocity. But as the numbers of people following you go into the hundreds of thousands, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be personally communicating with everyone. So why fake it?

The larger your list of followers, the less likely personal communications remains the goal of your Twitter use

Once your list of followers becomes very large, the interpersonal aspects of Twitter start to lose appeal, and the marketing and broadcasting aspects of the new medium become more obvious. The potential for Twitter as a boon to marketing is not lost anyone who is trying to get the word out to the masses about a complimentary product or service.

Twitter is unique in that it limits messages to 140 characters, but since you can include a URL in your message, the limitation hardly matters. It’s a great way to point people to content or products on your website that might be of interest. In many ways, broadcasting to Twitter can replace many functions of email and email newsletters. Your followers are, in essence, a list of interested people who have “opted-in” to receive updates about you or your company.

Blogging and Article Submission

This is a pretty good read for those interested in the benefits of article submission and guest blogging. I really like how they compare today's bloggers to print publications.

SiteProNews: Webmaster News & Resources » Blog Archive » Article Distribution vs. Guest Blogging: Is There a Difference?
To many people, the idea of guest blogging is fresh and new and very “Web 2.0.” Personally, I find the discussion to be a rather déjà vu-like experience. In fact, one participant on my blog responded to a post about articles by asking how I would contrast guest blogging with article marketing. He wanted to know how I chose between placing my articles on directories and writing an exclusive blog post. The short answer is: I don’t.

Remembering the Good Old Days of Article Marketing

Circa 1990, the first article directories began to pop up online with the invention of ezines (email magazines). Many publishers of these soon-to-be-popular email newsletters quickly got tired of writing all the content themselves. Others decided to offer compilations of recent articles published by others about a particular topic.

The article directories provided a wonderful new outlet for gathering quality content in exchange for a simple bio at the end with a link back to the author’s site. Articles were written to provide quality information to readers in the hope that they would favor the author with a click.

Tips for Making the Most of Twitter

SiteProNews: Webmaster News & Resources » Blog Archive » Twitter Tips - Twitter Tools
There are many Twitter tools available today, but there are two that I simply cannot live without. If you are unfamiliar with Twitter, it is basically a social networking tool that allows you to converse with hundreds if not thousands of people at a time in 140 characters or less.

Twitter allows you to quickly build relationships that could easily be worth thousands of dollars or more. Plus, you cannot put a price tag on a great friendship! Also, twitter is a great platform to drive traffic and also sales. But, of course the main objective behind twitter is building relationships and friendships.

Now, let’s get to the two twitter tools that I cannot live without. The first is TweetDeck and the second is TweetLater. In the following paragraphs I will explain exactly why I like these tools so much.

Write Better Content: Tips and Tricks

Write Better Content: Tips and Tricks
Who doesn’t want to write better content for Web pages? Great content can command online traffic, create revenue and help the writer of that content establish a good reputation or even an online fan following. Well-written, keyword-rich Web content is a very powerful tool. It’s also what most Web sites on the Internet desire. When you know how to write better content, there’s a lot you can achieve.

Content on the Web is a hot commodity and it’s what everyone wants. Well-written, keyword-rich content is attractive to readers, Web masters and search engines. In order to use it to boost your page rankings, levels of traffic and even revenue, you’ll have to learn how to create that content. Master a few tips and tricks, and you’ll learn the secrets of how to write better content.

Writing Better Content

Anyone can learn the secrets of writing better content, and online content can always be better. To write really good online content, it’s necessary to blend the needs of the site with the needs of the search engines -- and all of this must be molded into an easy-to-read, interesting bit of information for casual Internet readers. It may sound like a lot, especially when factoring in those all-important keywords, but writing better content should always be the goal. After all, why bother if it’s no good? Highly-polished, entertaining online content reflects well on you and the site where your content is displayed…and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Google Search Changes

Google Goes (Slightly) Semantic with Tweaks to Search Results
Google (Google reviews) has introduced two changes to its most important product, Search. It now recognizes longer queries and gives you longer description snippets as results. The idea is that, if you’ve written a longer search query, such as “Barbados fishing snorkeling gear and trips,” a short description snippet will not contain enough information for you.

The other change is much more important since it points to Google making use of certain semantic web technologies. Related searches - the terms associated to your query which are sometimes displayed at the bottom of the search result page - are now more intelligently chosen through the use of a new technology (Google hasn’t given out any details about the technology in question).

The example that Google gives is the search query “principles of physics.” The related searches offer will include terms such as “special relativity,” “angular momentum,” “big bang” and “quantum mechanics.” It’s not for English users only; as Google explains, it’ll work in 37 languages all around the world.
